The Pentagon requested $130.5 million to modernize the air base in Romania

The US military in the draft budget for 2021 requested $130.5 million for the modernization and expansion of the Kympia-Turzii air base in Romania, according to a draft document submitted to the US Congress on July 10. The text noted that the modernization of the base is needed to deploy larger US Air Force forces there for operations in Southeast Europe and the Black Sea region. The modernization project provides for the expansion of runways for the reception of heavy transport aircraft, the construction of additional parking lots, warehouses, fuel tanks, as well as the installation of a new air space control and air traffic control system. The Kympia-Tursiy air base has one of the key values ​ ​ for the ability of the European command and its military components to respond to the changing security situation in Europe, according to the text of the US Air Force request for 2021. The reconstruction of the Kympia-Tursiy air base is the largest foreign infrastructure project of the Pentagon, adopted by the US administration in June 2014 as part of the containment of Russia.
